Windows links the process main thread with a ~1 MiB stack (unix defaults
to 8 MiB). Coyote's root async future is a compiler-generated state
machine whose debug-build poll frames blow through 1 MiB the moment
block_on polls it, so every invocation of the binary on Windows died at
startup with STATUS_STACK_OVERFLOW (0xC00000FD) before doing any work.
Replace #[tokio::main] with an explicit bootstrap: main() spawns a
dedicated thread (named "main", 16 MiB stack) that builds the same
multi-thread enable_all runtime and block_on's the async body, then joins
and propagates the Result unchanged; panics are re-raised on the real
main thread via resume_unwind without re-invoking the panic hook, so
panic output and exit codes stay identical. Runtime worker threads get
the same 16 MiB headroom since spawned tasks embed the same class of
giant state machine.
The bootstrap is unconditional rather than cfg(windows)-gated: the unix
arrangement is behaviorally identical (same runtime flavor and driver
set — tokio's ctrl_c signal driver is thread-agnostic), and one shared
code path removes the entire small-main-stack class everywhere instead
of special-casing one OS. Verified on Linux with the full test suite
(inspection_flags 12/12) and the hooks usage probe end-to-end, including
the terminal ctrl-c -> agent.interrupted scenario.
Pure --mcp-list never reads secrets (only --mcp-add does), yet the mcp
action path always ran strict Vault::init, so a virgin environment with
no password file exited 1 instead of printing the empty listing. Route
the mcp_inspect path through the established Vault::init_lenient
constructor; get/remove/add stay on the strict init.
Make tests/inspection_flags.rs hermetic against host state: every
spawned binary gets a fresh fake HOME (and USERPROFILE) so a real
~/.coyote_password can't mask virgin-environment regressions, scrubs
IS_SANDBOX/COYOTE_PROVIDER/COYOTE_PLATFORM outside the sandbox-mode
tests, and pins CWD so workspace mcp.json discovery can't leak in.
New tests pin both sides of the boundary: the lenient list path (empty
and configured, never bootstrapping a password file) and the strict
vault gate for get/remove/add.
The --macro dispatch arm now opens the top-level agent bracket before
macro_execute and closes it signal-aware afterwards, draining pending
hooks like the --execute arm; both bracket calls no-op without a loaded
agent, so agent-less macro runs are unaffected. The isolated arm of
macro_execute closes the bracket an in-macro .agent step opens on its
fresh context, on the step-failure path too. Binary-level tests pin
agent.started plus exactly one terminal event for the --agent flag and
for in-macro .agent steps in both isolation modes, on success and
failure.
- escalation.raised fires in the child ctx after queue submit; escalation.answered
fires in the parent ctx from the taken request, so both agree on origin envs
- escalation.* resolves global hooks ungated: the per-agent global_hooks whitelist
never applies to these root-level events
- session.resumed fires on the use_session resume leg, inverse of session.started
- agent.interrupted replaces agent.completed/failed when the abort signal was
ctrl-c'd: top-level bracket (now abort-aware), spawned-subagent result arm
(agent__cancel / REPL ctrl-c), and graph agent nodes via the session signal;
exit_agent and the shell-exit path stay non-interrupted by passing no signal
- document the deliberate non-fire paths (direct prompts, escalation timeout and
parent-drop, graph approval nodes)
The look-don't-touch bypass was keyed on load_with_interpolation's
pre-existing bool, which mutating early paths (--authenticate, --auth-mcp,
mcp manage, vault flags) already passed as true meaning only 'skip vault
interpolation' — so they silently lost their first-run config creation.
Split the parameter: skip_interpolation keeps the historical meaning,
a distinct inspection flag alone gates the missing-config default/wizard
bypass.
inspection_only is now computed from an explicit read-only whitelist:
--sync-models is excluded (it downloads and writes models-override.yaml)
and returns to the bootstrap/strict path, keeping only its historical
interpolation-skip and vault leniency. mcp/vault inspection sub-conditions
are hoisted and shared so mutating flag combos never inherit the bypass.
Coverage: sandbox vault contract tests, a sync-models bootstrap-path pin,
a --sync-models scenario in usage-probe-inspection.sh, and a PTY wizard
regression probe (scripts/usage-probe-wizard.sh).
- Skip the builtins bootstrap, function-binary build, and tool-scope
rebuild for inspection-only runs (--info/--list-*/--mcp-list/
--list-secrets without --agent/--role): a pristine COYOTE_CONFIG_DIR
now stays byte-empty (was 269 files written before dispatch)
- Tolerate a model-less default config on the inspection surface via
AppConfig::from_config_lenient + Model::default() in bootstrap;
strict 'No available model' behavior unchanged for the REPL path and
all mutating mcp/vault flags
- --list-secrets degrades to an rc=0 informational message in sandbox
mode (mutating vault flags still fail there), pinned by test
- Add the 041.7-4 regression test: a malformed COYOTE_<NAME>_GLOBAL_TOOLS
env override logs the debug message and leaves global_tools untouched
- Adopt scripts/usage-probe-inspection.sh (10 flags: rc=0 + zero writes,
output required only for --info) and add binary-level
tests/inspection_flags.rs, incl. the agent+--info still-bootstraps pin
- Open the top-level agent bracket only at committed dispatch sites so
inspection-flag early returns (--list-sessions, --info, --macro,
--rebuild-rag, --init-*, --build-tools) never leak agent.started
- Close the agent bracket ahead of process::exit in shell_execute's
execute branch, where the dispatch wrapper's close is unreachable
- Extract the ask-loop auto-compression seam and cover the
session.compressed success path at both call sites with sink tests
- Prove Session.role_hooks never serializes and that injected
role_hooks YAML is ignored on deserialization
Turn bracket (repl::TurnBracket): turn.started on entry and exactly one of
turn.{completed, interrupted, failed} on exit, with the interrupted-vs-failed
discrimination (abort_signal.aborted_ctrlc()) in one place. Wired at the
three outer boundaries: ask(), start_directive, and shell_execute — never at
the per-LLM-round before/after_chat_completion seams.
Session seams: session.started fires for newly created sessions only
(use_session's new_from_ctx paths; resume fires nothing), session.ended in
exit_session while the session is still attached, session.compressed on the
success path of both compress_session call sites (auto-compression and the
.compress command).
Session-held role hooks: Session snapshots the role's HooksMap on set_role,
clears it on clear_role/sync_agent, and re-reads it from the role file on
load; resolved_hooks gains a session leg so role hooks keep firing when the
role lives in the session (fresh set_role and resumed sessions alike).
Top-level agent bracket: agent.started/completed/failed once per agent RUN —
headless --agent dispatch and the interactive agent-context lifetime (enter
via .agent or startup; exit via switch-away or REPL teardown), never per
message. COYOTE_AGENT_ID is synthesized as top-<agent-name>-<nonce>.
Exit-path seams call hooks::drain_pending with a 2s bound so exit hooks
finish spawning before process teardown; interactive mid-session events
never drain.
Introduce src/hooks.rs as a types-only module (HookDef, HooksMap) and
plumb hooks:/global_hooks: config fields through every scope:
- Config + AppConfig hooks field, both Default impls, the manual
from_config copy, and a COYOTE_HOOKS env override
- Role frontmatter: hand-parsed hooks arm, private field, getter, and
JSON-inline re-serialization in Role::export (malformed maps degrade
to None)
- AgentConfig + Graph: hooks + global_hooks on both structs, copied in
AgentConfig::from_graph, with a per-agent global_hooks env override
- paths::hooks_dir() = <config_dir>/hooks with COYOTE_HOOKS_DIR override
- Commented hooks: block in the global config template (global scope
only; no global_hooks key)
No engine or dispatch logic yet; existing configs parse unchanged.
Add a hidden --generate-models flag that rebuilds models.yaml from
models.dev and OpenRouter merged with the hand-owned quirks overlay,
regenerate the committed catalog with it (393 -> 1090 models), and
retire the Python updater. GitHub becomes fully quirks-owned since
upstream only tracks Copilot ids, legacy ids upstream dropped are
preserved as hand-owned quirks entries, and non-chat model families
(image/tts/audio/realtime) are excluded from generation.
The supervisor registry went kind-generic (TaskHandle::Agent | Job)
earlier in this branch, but the module holding the agent__* handlers
and two model-facing error strings still carried the old name:
- src/function/supervisor.rs -> src/function/agents.rs (it contains
only agent__* tool handlers, pairing with function/jobs.rs; the
kind-generic src/supervisor/ registry keeps its name)
- 'Supervisor tool failed' -> 'Agent tool failed'
- 'Unknown supervisor action' -> 'Unknown agent action'
Completes the .prompt/.temp-role split: --prompt set an ad-hoc system
role, which is what .temp-role now means everywhere. The --prompt name
is left unbound so a future one-shot MCP prompt flag can take it with
properly designed non-interactive semantics. use_prompt follows the
rename as use_temp_role.
BREAKING CHANGE: invocations using --prompt <text> must switch to
--temp-role <text>; clap rejects the old flag loudly.
The path-escape guard that uninstall applies to recorded paths now also
covers update's obsolete-file deletion through a shared check, so a
tampered store cannot turn either delete site into an arbitrary file
removal. Updates gain a working non-interactive path: --yes now applies
to --update-bundle (locally modified files, obsolete files, and modified
mcp entries are all kept; everything else refreshes), owned mcp entries
whose recorded hash still matches the local entry take the remote side
without prompting, and the non-TTY conflict bails name the flag that
actually works per surface. An update records its new commit and version
only after files and mcp entries land, so an aborted update cannot claim
content it never wrote. The store gains a version field and rejects
stores from newer builds, the corrupt-store error no longer advises the
removal that would forfeit ownership tracking, and duplicate records
tracking one source abort a rename instead of overwriting a record.
Reinstalling from a source URL reclassifies owned unmodified files as
silent refreshes just like updates. git runs with GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0
and a null stdin so private or mistyped URLs fail instead of hanging.
File comparison fills buffers fully before comparing, deleting an
obsolete file prunes emptied directories, mcp.json backfill uses the
fsynced atomic writer, --list-bundles no longer triggers builtin
backfill, bundle-name completion logs store errors instead of swallowing
them and offers --yes, and REPL .uninstall rejects unknown flags.
The user-origin marker on replaced mcp.json entries is now sticky:
re-records and cross-bundle transfers only upgrade replaced to
transferred when the prior record proves bundle origin, so updating a
bundle can no longer make uninstall delete a key the user had before the
bundle replaced it. Canonical source URLs lowercase only the host, since
self-hosted forges treat repository paths as case-sensitive and
collapsing distinct repos misdirects updates and uninstalls. git clone
invocations pass '--' before the URL so a crafted source cannot be
parsed as a git flag. Lifecycle flags (--install, --install-builtins,
--update-bundle, --uninstall) and their companions now conflict
explicitly instead of first-match dispatch silently dropping actions.
--install-from returns as a hidden tombstone that errors with the
replacement instead of feeding the flag to the LLM as prompt text.
--list-bundles dispatches before config load so a pure read no longer
boots MCP servers. write_file_atomic fsyncs before the rename so a crash
cannot persist a truncated store. REPL: .uninstall accepts --yes,
.install rejects trailing tokens after a category, and .install remote
gets a migration hint. Plus polish: host validation rejects '#' and '?',
renamed_to no longer serializes null, derived names get a debug assert
against the validator, completions share DEFAULT_GIT_HOST, README
mentions skills.
--install someuser/repo expands to https://github.com/someuser/repo;
--git-host overrides the default host and forces source interpretation
even when the value matches an installed bundle name. Two or more path
segments are accepted so nested GitLab-style groups work, and #ref
pinning applies to shorthand values. --uninstall resolves owner/repo
against recorded sources: a single match uninstalls, multiple matches
prompt an interactive selection showing each bundle's source, and
non-interactive runs bail instead of guessing.
--install <git-url|name> is the single entry point for remote installs
and updates; the unified .install dispatch likewise replaces
.install remote. Flag completion for .install now applies to the
unified form.
--install now takes a git URL or an installed bundle name: categories
are redirected to the new --install-builtins, installed names become
implicit updates, and source-shaped values install remotely. The old
--install-from keeps its exact behavior as a hidden deprecated alias.
The REPL's .install gains the same unified dispatch while keeping
.install <category> and .install remote <url> back-compat.
Updates re-clone a bundle's recorded source (honoring a recorded commit
pin unless a #<ref> override moves it), silently refresh files the bundle
owns that the user never modified, and fall back to the normal conflict
prompts for modified or unowned files. Files the remote no longer ships
are offered for deletion (kept by default non-interactively, staying
owned). The record is refreshed with the new commit, version, and
metadata, and stamped with an updated_at timestamp on success.
Mirrors --no-workspace-mcp exactly: a CLI-only flag backed by an
AppConfig field (default false) that disables .coyote/macros in both
the resolved macro policy and Macro::load's workspace-then-global
preference, so the two always agree (custom-commands design §5).
All CLI flag processing (--agent, --role, --rag, --model, --no-memory,
--no-stream, --no-workspace-instructions, etc.) now runs through run()
before the REPL/cmd split. The ACP server is dispatched right before
match is_repl, after apply_prelude and skills loading, so it benefits
from the complete context setup with no duplication or drift risk.
These CLI flags were previously ignored because the ACP branch returned
before run() could apply them. Now the context is configured with the
requested agent, role, RAG index, and model before the server starts.
Session management remains protocol-driven via session/new and session/load.
RenderMode::Silent was incorrectly applied to --headless in addition to
--acp-server. Standalone headless should still display the LLM response;
only ACP mode requires stdout purity for JSON-RPC. The acp server's
run_prompt_turn already sets Silent before each prompt call.
